  Ethiopia is one of the poorest nations in the world ranking 171st from 174 countries. In 2004, Peter Kenyon was involved in helping facilitate a workshop on National Youth Policy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. During his time in the country, Peter was fortunate to visit a sub city of Addis called Ledeta, a home to 80,000 children and young people. In this area, there are only two small and substandard libraries.

A team of local young people lead by Konjit Berhanu, a trained lawyer, but someone who has opted to work directly with the needs of homeless young people, had the vision of creating a space and library for children and young people. The Bank of I.D.E.A.S. decided to support the efforts and will contribute financially from its Community Hope Fund to coordinate the collection and transport of children and youth books, videos and games and facilitate others who may wish to support.
       

During 2005, with the support of the Bank of I.D.E.A.S., Konjit and her team secured a suitable building and the library has been furnished with both furniture and a very limited supply of books.

During 2006-07, the Bank of I.D.E.A.S. has also been collecting books and games and has sent two large deliveries (10,000 plus books) from Australia to Ethiopia. The cost of shipping the books is approx. AUD $2800.00, so if you would like to assist by donating money towards the shipping cost please send an email to pk@bankofideas.com.au.
