| History in the Making | Top ^ |
Bank of I.D.E.A.S have immense respect for David Wilson of Heritage Development International and his ability to use heritage to build community and economic development. Currently David is riding a penny farthing the length of New Zealand, the first time this has ever been attempted. David mounted upon
‘Pioneer Spirit’, an 1880s-style, 54 inch high-wheeled penny farthing bicycle replica on 12th November 2011 for the 2000 kilometres journey which is expected to take until January 2012. He will be travelling alone, relying on his own resources and the kindness of strangers for comfort along the way, and will keep a daily log (blog) of the trip at the end of each days ride. The ride will require surviving such modern hazards as bad weather, hunger, thirst, stray animals, poor roads and encounters with inconsiderate and menacing motorists. The Oamaru Mail is running a regular feature and report with photos on the ride, and the Tourism Waitaki website will carry regular updates along with a blog site. For more detail click here. Travel well Dave. |

thanks to Laura and Becky from Oklahoma for the following contribution. My hometown of Alva, Oklahoma, is doing something that most any small town could benefit from: building a habit of helping in our people. People make small donations, conveniently at all the local banks. Most of the banks have pledged matching funds. (Double cool.) The group picks just three or four causes to support each year. This year, they did the local food bank, the summer youth sports and arts activities, the schools, and currently the senior citizens' nutrition center. Want to build on this idea? Our communities are not run like the Army, and there’s no government department or corporate CEO at the helm.” To read, click here. |

| 7 Secrets to Coping With Change in Small Towns | Top ^ |
|
Milan Wall and Vicki Luther from the Heartland Center for Leadership Development in the USA have a long history of providing insightful observations about small town development and leadership. This paper by them provides "Seven Secrets", drawn from the experience of several years of immersion into the challenges facing small towns and rural communities, as they struggle to overcome the
uncertainties caused by a fickle world economy and the continuing depopulation of America's countryside. Obviously, these are not "secrets" in the sense that no one else knows about them. But they do represent an important perspective that gets relatively little attention, despite overwhelming evidence that small towns with the right leadership can survive... even in times like these.
