Greetings

Jessica Watson- Inspirational Young Women

Last weekend, it was inspirational to watch Jessica Watson return to Sydney Harbour and become the youngest person to sail around the world, solo, non-stop and unassisted. In a world gone crazy with over protection and ‘duty of care’ paranoia, it was great to see this feat.

Instead of the normal “take care” approach, great to see family and friends say “Go for it. Take a risk”. Her own words were inspirational at her return -"I don't consider myself a hero, I'm an ordinary girl…. You don't have to be someone special to achieve something amazing, you've just got to have a dream, believe in it and work hard. I'd like to think I've proved that anything really is possible if you set your mind to it. People don't realise what young people, and what young girls are capable of, and it's amazing when you take away those expectations what you can achieve."

Great Mandela Quote Top ^

Given the 20th anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela, some of his great quotes are worth reflecting on. This is one of our favourites.

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.”
‘Talking Up Our Strengths’ Cards Top ^
This is the name of a very exciting resource designed to be visual aids for Aboriginal people to share their stories. In the words of Steve Harkins of the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Childcare (one of the groups responsible for their production) – “these cards are designed to help us to focus on what we, as Aboriginal people have done to remain proud, resilient and strong. They recognise and honour the underlying teachings of our many cultures that bind us and make us proud”.

Do It Yourself in Service Training Programme Top ^
Our friend Jurek Leon has from Terrific Trading has produced a fabulous set of do-it-yourself training resources to help sales teams achieve great outcomes. Here’s how it works:
  • It has short exercises and explanatory notes to help the team develop their skills on-the-job.
  • You don’t need to be a trainer to use it and there is a manager and coaches guide to make things easy.
  • You only download, print and issue one module at a time giving out information in bite sized chunks. The team get a few days to digest it, do a couple of practical exercises then meet up with you ready to discuss what they’ve learnt and how it relates to your store – 15 to 20 minutes of discussion with them each week and you’ll see great results.
  • Exercises often require them to discuss points with other staff members so each time someone new is going through the program, it’s a refresher for your more experienced team members... without taking them off-the-job.
  • Because people learn in different ways there are cartoons highlighting key points and supporting audio files for each module.
  • There’s an open helpline to the Terrific Trading team without the consultancy charges this would otherwise incur.
For more details, click here.  IT is inexpensive and comes with a TERRIFIC guarantee!!

  • Where do we want to be?
  • How will we get there?
  • How will we know we are on track?

Timebank Top ^
This is another exciting social capital building initiative that is sweeping the globe. It is operating now in 22 countries in 6 continents. Simply it involves a local community creating a simple system where a resident’s voluntary hour of contribution is recorded and this enables the participant to utilise someone else’s hour of skill. For every hour you spend doing something for someone in your community, you earn one Time Dollar. Then you have a Time Dollar to spend on having someone do something for you. How simple! What a way to start connecting people in community or in the words of one TImebanker – “Time banks weave community one hour at a time”. In a town like Lyttelton, New Zealand, it is estimated that 10% of residents are now members of the scheme.
